NBA Insider’s ‘Top WNBA Moments’ Column Gets Backlash for Not Including a Single In-Game Moment

Instead of breaking news or dropping his famous breaking news tweets in the form of “Woj Bombs,” star ESPN reporter Adrian Wojnarowski broke the trust of many female fans with his recent column “Top 10 Moments in WNBA History.” Not a single moment on the list mentions any on court achievement.

“I realize that my column may not feature certain accomplishments on the hardwood, but I think I nailed the list. The orange hoodie? Kobe wore it to a game with his daughter, rest in peace, and it absolutely exploded. It’s still the highest grossing item in their store by like 586%. The Brittney Griner video where she calls out Boogie Cousins 1-on-1? Most people can’t even name a single franchise, hundreds of thousands can quote that video.” Wojnarowski also said, “Who get’s paid to cover basketball for this company? That’s what I thought.

Wojnarowski completely refutes any responsibility for the sexist undertones of the column that symbolically spits in the face of women’s sports. There is no record of the ESPN reporter apologizing or showing remorse of any kind. Here’s what ESPN President James Pitaro had to say about his leading NBA reporter:

“We have read the column and we have heard the outpour from our vast group of female sports fans. We want you lovely ladies to know that we are launching an internal investigation on Mr. Wojnarowski. We will leave no stone unturned, and we assure you we take this very, very, very seriously. To prove our commitment to female equality in sports, we are launching our very own WNBA clothing collection for purchase now. Buy our merch! Support women’s sports!”

Pitaro followed up the next day, “Wojnarowski will not be suspended, but had a very stern talking to.” ESPN continues talk a big game in regards to gender equality, but doesn’t walk the walk. What was supposed to be a tribute uplifting the graceful competitive spirit of female sports, instead is a belittling of the audience he was writing for. Female athletes around the country have taken notice and aren’t happy with Wojnarowski or ESPN’s handling of the situation.

Becca Lawrence, the number one ranked high school basketball player in the nation who currently is deciding whether to sign a letter of intent with either UConn or South Carolina, said, “I think it sucks. There are so many moments in WNBA history that have left a lasting legacy in basketball lore that stack up against classic NBA moments. Teresa Weatherspoon’s half court buzzer beater in the 1999 WNBA Finals? Lisa Leslie throwing down the first dunk in league history? Iconic is an understatement.”

At this point it is unlikely Wojnarowski will be disciplined, setting a disappointing precedent for the sport’s entertainment company that entails undermining competitive women’s sports. Fuck it, since ESPN has shown they don’t even notice the contributions made by women, I’ll sign off with a big fuck you to all men, especially the ones at ESPN who burp and fart in the cubicles at all hours of the workday. I want to offer a sincere fuck you Woj, and a big fuck you Mr. Pitaro, a $25 dollar gift card to the apple store isn’t a Christmas bonus.

ESPN's Joan Corusco contributed to this report, likely the last of her career.
